KABUL: Abdullah Rahimi, a former operations chief of Afghanistan’s National Directorate of Security in Taywara district of Ghor province, has been shot dead by unidentified armed men, local sources said.
Rahimi, a resident of Zerni village in Taywara, was killed on Saturday evening while returning home from a mosque.
Local residents said the attackers were wearing military uniforms at the time of the shooting. The motive behind the killing and the identity of the assailants remain unknown.
Sources said Rahimi had been living as an ordinary civilian in his home village since the collapse of the former Afghan government in August 2021. He had no known personal disputes or enemies.
His killing comes amid continuing concerns over the safety of former Afghan security personnel under Taliban rule.
In recent weeks, two former security members were also reported killed in separate incidents in Parwan and Daikundi provinces. One former officer was found dead after being detained, while another former soldier was shot dead by armed men.
Although the Taliban announced a general amnesty after returning to power, human rights organisations and United Nations reports have repeatedly documented allegations of extrajudicial killings, enforced disappearances and arbitrary detentions targeting former government officials and security personnel.
