NEW YORK: At least eight people, including four children, were shot and injured late on the United States’ Independence Day in New York City’s Coney Island neighbourhood, ABC News reported, citing the New York City Police Department (NYPD).
According to ABC News, police officers responded to reports of a shooting at about 10:37 pm local time on Saturday on the 2900 block of West 31st Street in the Brooklyn neighbourhood.
According to the broadcaster, the victims included two men, two women and four children. The injured were identified by age as a 37-year-old man, a 33-year-old man, a 25-year-old woman, a 21-year-old woman, a 14-year-old boy, a 12-year-old boy, a seven-year-old boy and a six-year-old boy.
The NYPD said, as quoted by ABC News, that all eight victims were taken by emergency medical services to local hospitals.
Seven of those injured were reported to be in stable condition, while the 21-year-old woman remained in critical condition, according to the police statement cited by ABC News.
Police recovered a firearm at the scene but had not made any arrests as of Sunday, ABC News reported, citing the NYPD.
The NYPD did not immediately respond to a request for comment, Reuters news agency reported.
The shooting took place on the night of the US Independence Day celebrations in the busy seaside neighbourhood of Coney Island, where large crowds had gathered for the holiday.
Saturday marked the 250th anniversary of the independence of the United States.
