DUBAI: The United Arab Emirates (UAE) Tuesday promised $100 million to Turkiye and Syria one of the largest sums yet after a major quake that killed over 5,400 people across the two countries.
The Gulf nation which has already pledged around $13.6 million to Syria, is leading relief efforts, having dispatched airplanes to Syria and Turkiye with relief items and rescue teams after the 7.8-magnitude earthquake.
UAE Vows to Support Turkiye, Syria
According to Emirates News Agency, on Tuesday, UAE’s President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al-Nahyan ordered the provision of $100 million for quake-affected people.
The amount would be equally divided between Turkiye and Syria with each getting $50 million, the news agency reported.

UAE’s defense ministry said Tuesday that three airplanes had been sent to Turkiye, carrying rescue teams who have since commenced operations. It added that seven flights are planned to the quake-affected countries, including two to Damascus. Syria’s local media reported on Tuesday that a UAE plane carrying ten tons of food items had arrived at the Damascus international airport.
