ISLAMABAD: Customs Staff and the Border Station of Ghulam Khan in South Waziristan have foiled an attempt to smuggle Russian-origin ammunition into Pakistan from Afghanistan.
According to media reports, a truck carrying mixed vegetables and fruits entered the NLC terminal at the Custom Border Station at night. A cavity was found during inspection of the goods. After physical inspection, huge quantities of ammunition and weapons of various varieties, all of Russian origin, were recovered in several hidden cavities.
Amjad Ur Rehman, Collector of Customs Appraisement Peshawar, and Hammad Ahmed, Assistant Collector of Customs in Ghulam Khan North Waziristan, carried out the operation. The officials began their investigation and hunt for the involved culprits. The officials also provided an inventory of the items they had recovered. A made in Yugoslavia submachine gun (SMG) and a USA M-16 rifle without a magazine were discovered.
50,132 foreign-origin bullets were placed throughout the Mazda truck in numerous places. Authorities claim that during the attempt to smuggle, 1680 kg of fresh green chili, 4200 kg of fresh apple, and 1050 kg of fresh cucumber were also found.
