DALLAS: Cristiano Ronaldo has confirmed that the 2026 FIFA World Cup will be his last, saying he will end his trophy-laden career on his own terms and with no regrets.
The 41-year-old Portugal captain, who is playing at a record sixth World Cup, made the announcement ahead of Portugal’s Round of 16 clash against Spain in Dallas on Monday.
“Let this be my last World Cup; it is my last World Cup, and I hope tomorrow won’t be my last match,” Ronaldo said at the end of his press conference, receiving applause from journalists.
Earlier, the former Manchester United and Real Madrid forward had avoided directly confirming whether this would be his final tournament, saying he would finish when he chooses.
“I have given all I could to football. It’s my passion to play for so many years,” Ronaldo said.
He added that he was not putting pressure on himself to win at all costs and wanted to enjoy every match at the tournament.
Ronaldo said he was satisfied with his performances so far, having scored three goals in the competition.
The Portugal captain also expressed confidence in Roberto Martinez’s side ahead of the Spain match, saying the team was calm, well prepared and improving with every game.
