Greece: A British couple on their honeymoon and their pilot were killed when a private helicopter crashed on the Greek island of Sifnos on Monday, Greek police said.

The couple were identified as Alexander Cromie and Marie Ebert. Greek newspaper Kathimerini reported that they were on their honeymoon.

The helicopter crashed only metres from a landing pad, killing both passengers and the Greek pilot.

The couple were reportedly travelling from Markopoulo, near Athens, to Sifnos, a popular holiday destination.

The crash occurred shortly before the helicopter was due to land at about 18:15 local time, according to a senior police official quoted by The Times.

Sifnos Deputy Mayor Manolis Foundoulakis said he arrived at the scene shortly after the crash and that there was almost “nothing left” of the aircraft.

Local residents reportedly heard what they described as a “bizarre engine noise” shortly before the helicopter came down near their homes.

Two of the victims were found inside the wreckage, while the third was found a short distance away, Mr Foundoulakis said.

Firefighters responded to the crash and extinguished a fire that broke out at the site.

An investigation has been launched to determine what caused the helicopter to crash.

The UK Foreign Office, Greek authorities and the aviation company involved have been approached for comment.
