SAN FRANCISCO, United States: Amazon has announced a further $5 billion investment in AI startup Anthropic, strengthening its partnership with the firm behind the Claude artificial intelligence platform.
The latest funding builds on the $8 billion Amazon has already committed to Anthropic, with the company indicating it could invest up to $20 billion more if performance targets are achieved.
Anthropic, based in San Francisco, said it plans to spend over $100 billion on Amazon Web Services (AWS) infrastructure over the next decade to support the growing demand for AI capabilities.
“We need to build the infrastructure to keep pace with rapidly growing demand,” said Anthropic chief executive Dario Amodei.
“Our collaboration with Amazon will allow us to continue advancing AI research while delivering Claude to our customers.”
Competitive AI sector
The announcement comes as Anthropic reports strong growth, with the company saying earlier this month that its annualised revenue has surged past $30 billion, surpassing rivals in the competitive AI sector.
The partnership also highlights shifting dynamics between the company and the US government. After earlier tensions over the use of its AI models for defence purposes, recent discussions with officials have focused on cooperation and managing risks linked to advanced technologies.
A White House spokesperson said, “We discussed opportunities for collaboration, as well as shared approaches and protocols to address the challenges associated with scaling this technology.”
Anthropic recently unveiled a new AI model, Mythos, but chose not to release it publicly due to concerns about potential cybersecurity risks.
