JEDDAH, Saudi Arabia: Saudi Arabia’s historic Gulf Cup triumph has raised hopes of a successful campaign at the 2027 AFC Asian Cup, with the Green Falcons gaining valuable momentum ahead of the continental tournament on home soil.

The Kingdom ended a 22-year wait for another Gulf Cup title after defeating the United Arab Emirates 2-0 in Tuesday’s final at King Abdullah Sports City in Jeddah.

Goals from Hammam Al Hammami and Feras Al Brikan secured Saudi Arabia’s fourth regional championship, sparking celebrations among more than 62,000 supporters.

The victory also provided an encouraging indication of the national team’s progress under head coach Georgios Donis.

Defensive strength offers encouragement

Saudi Arabia’s Gulf Cup campaign was particularly impressive because of its defensive consistency.

The Green Falcons completed the tournament unbeaten, recording four victories and one draw while scoring eight goals without conceding.

Their campaign included victories over Kuwait, Oman and Iraq before a penalty shootout success against reigning Asian champions Qatar in the semi-finals.

The final against the UAE demonstrated Saudi Arabia’s attacking quality, with two goals inside the opening 13 minutes establishing control of the match.

Goalkeeper Mohammed Al Owais also delivered important performances, helping the team maintain five consecutive clean sheets.

The combination of defensive organisation and attacking efficiency could prove valuable when Saudi Arabia faces stronger competition at the Asian Cup.

Asian Cup ambitions

Saudi Arabia will host the AFC Asian Cup for the first time from January 7 to February 5, 2027, welcoming 24 national teams.

The Green Falcons have been drawn in Group A alongside Palestine, Oman and Kuwait.

Their opening match against Palestine will take place at King Fahd Sports City Stadium in Riyadh on January 7.

Playing in familiar conditions, backed by passionate home supporters, could provide an important advantage as Saudi Arabia seeks another major international achievement.

The Gulf Cup final offered a glimpse of that atmosphere, with thousands of supporters celebrating the team’s success in Jeddah.

Greater success for 2027

Donis believes the Gulf Cup victory reflects improvements made by his players following their disappointing World Cup campaign.

“We were the best team in this competition. This title gives us confidence for the future,” the coach said after the final.

Player of the Tournament Al Hammami also described the Asian Cup as an even bigger challenge, expressing hope that the Gulf Cup success would provide additional motivation.

Saudi Arabia will face a demanding continental competition featuring established Asian powers, including Japan, South Korea, Australia and defending champions Qatar.

Nevertheless, the Green Falcons now have a recent championship, growing confidence and strong home support as they prepare for the tournament.

The Gulf Cup victory has given Saudi Arabia a promising foundation, but maintaining the same discipline and consistency will be essential to translating regional success into continental glory.
