KABUL: The Afghanistan United Front has claimed responsibility for at least 43 operations against Taliban forces across 14 Afghan provinces during August, saying the attacks killed 74 Taliban members and wounded another 35.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the opposition group said its forces had carried out the operations between August 1 and August 31, targeting Taliban personnel whom it accused of arresting, torturing and harassing Afghan civilians.
The United Front launched what it described as a military campaign against the Taliban on August 1. Since then, the group has released videos purporting to show attacks on Taliban positions and the bodies of fighters it claimed were killed in the operations.
Hilal Kakar, a spokesman for the United Front of Afghanistan, said in a video statement that the group’s most significant operation during the month was a direct assault on a Taliban army corps in Kandahar. He described an attack on a military base in Nawzad district of Helmand as the group’s largest operation during the month, claiming that the assault inflicted heavy casualties on Taliban forces.
Kakar also claimed that United Front fighters captured ammunition during some of the operations. The attacks were reportedly carried out in several parts of Afghanistan, including Kandahar, Helmand, Badghis, Ghor and Faryab, among other provinces.

“We will save Afghans from the Taliban and seek a prosperous and free Afghanistan,” Kakar said. The group also vowed to continue its armed campaign until, it said, the Taliban administration was removed and a system of governance based on the will of the Afghan people was restored.
The United Front is led by Sami Sadat, a former Afghan army commander. It announced on August 1 that it had begun military operations against the Taliban and what it described as other militant groups operating in Afghanistan.
The latest claims come amid continued opposition to Taliban rule from armed groups seeking to challenge the authorities in Kabul. The United Front has sought to portray its campaign as a resistance movement aimed at protecting Afghan civilians and eventually replacing Taliban rule.
