KABUL: The Afghanistan Green Trend, headed by former Afghan vice-president Amrullah Saleh, has alleged that Pakistan is holding consultations with Taliban opponents regarding a possible political arrangement beyond the current administration in Kabul.
In a statement shared on X on Monday, the group claimed that Islamabad is implementing what it described as a coordinated, multi-track policy toward the Taliban authorities.
According to the statement, Pakistan has linked trade and economic engagement to evolving security and political conditions, while maintaining restrictions at key border crossings – a move it says has increased the Taliban’s dependence on northern transit routes and Iran.
The opposition group further alleged that Pakistan has exercised influence over Afghan airspace and carried out targeted strikes, asserting that the Taliban lack both credible air defence capabilities and broad international recognition.
It also claimed that Pakistani authorities have built domestic political consensus for their approach to Afghanistan and are seeking external diplomatic backing for what it characterised as efforts countering the Taliban.
The Afghanistan Green Trend stated that Pakistan is positioning itself once again as a dominant external actor in Afghanistan, with the objective of neutralising infrastructure and military equipment left behind by NATO and the United States.
According to Afghanistan International TV, the group argued that the Taliban administration continues to face limited international recognition and insufficient internal legitimacy, describing Afghanistan’s current governance structure as lacking the attributes of a fully functioning modern state.
In its concluding remarks, the movement warned that what it termed political rigidity and short-sighted decision-making by the Taliban may have closed the window for an inclusive, Afghan-led political settlement.
The Afghanistan Green Trend (AGT) is an Afghan political movement formed in exile after the Taliban takeover of Kabul in August 2021. It is led by Amrullah Saleh, who served as Afghanistan’s First Vice President under former president Ashraf Ghani.
