ISLAMABAD: The 9th of Muharram is being observed across Pakistan on Friday (today) with due solemnity and sanctity to pay tribute to the great sacrifices of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) – the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) – and his companions in Karbala.

Alam, Taziya, and Zuljanah processions would be taken out in all big cities and towns across the country in the memory of Karbala martyrs. Marsiayas and Nohas, along with the practice of self-flagellation, will echo around the streets.

Hazrat Imam Hussain (R.A), along with seventy-two of his companions, including family members and friends, were martyred at the hands of Yazid’s forces at the Battle of Karbala in Iraq in 61 AH (680 AD) after Hazrat Hussain (R.A) rejected to pledge allegiance for his despotic rule.

On these days, clerics and scholars will shed light on the social, historical, and religious aspects of the matchless sacrifice of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA). Moreover, his candid teachings and great companions will also be emphasized through majalis.

The devotees will carry out main processions from imambargahs to observe the 9th of Muharram with religious fervor and sanctity to pay homage to Hazrat Imam Hussain (R.A) and his companions in Karbala.

Security for Muharram Processions

Security has been beefed up country-wide for the majalis and mourning processions. Police and Rangers are deployed all along the route of the main processions. Around 1600 security personnel are deployed to secure the capital city Islamabad’s main procession, whereas in Lahore, nearly 17,000 security personnel would guard the processions and majalis.

The government has decided to block mobile phone service in Islamabad, Karachi, and in fourteen districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP). Police contingents have been stationed in all sensitive places, and all roads leading to the imambargahs have been blocked by police.
