TAOS: Two persons were killed and six others were injured in a firefight that occurred involving a motorbike event in Red River, northern New Mexico, state police said on Saturday.
Red River Mayor Linda Calhoun stated over the phone that during the annual Memorial Day motorcycle rally, riders started firing at one another on the mountain town’s main street approximately 75 miles northeast of the state capital Santa Fe. She said there had been three fatalities and five injuries.
Calhoun added that motorcycle gang members declined to reveal more about their identities. All of them came from outside the city.
The celebration, which includes live music and commemoration rituals at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in neighbouring Angel Fire, was projected to draw some 28,000 bikers from across the nation.
According to state police on Twitter, several of the injured were sent to a hospital in Taos, New Mexico, some 25 miles to the southwest.
Following the incident, Taos Town imposed a curfew and prohibited the selling of alcohol.
The event occurred eight years after a firefight between members of motorcycle gangs including the Bandidos and Cossacks in Waco, Texas resulted in nine bikers dying and 18 being injured.
