KHARTOUM: A week-long conflict between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces has claimed over 400 lives and injured more than 3,500 people, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO).
UNICEF has confirmed that at least nine children were among the dead, while over 50 children were wounded.
The violence has had a devastating impact on the country’s children, as families are trapped without access to electricity, food, water, and medicine.
Child malnutrition rate in Sudan
Sudan, which already had one of the world’s highest rates of child malnutrition, is now facing critical disruptions in life-saving care for an estimated 50,000 severely acutely malnourished children.
The most critical cases are being fed with tubes, as fighting and bombing continue outside the hospitals.
The fighting has also put over $40 million worth of vaccines and insulin at risk due to fuel shortages and breaks in the power supply.
UNICEF has called for the immediate cessation of hostilities and asked all parties to respect their international obligations to protect children from harm.
