NEW YORK: The head of the United Nations’ nuclear watchdog, Rafael Grossi, is set to travel to Russia’s Kaliningrad territory on Wednesday for discussions on the safety of Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant.
Grossi has been working on a security plan for the site, located in southern Ukraine, amid concerns over increased military activity in the area.
Persistent shelling of the plant since Russia’s invasion last year has heightened fears over its safety.
IAEA chief expected to meet Russian delegation
Grossi is expected to meet with a Russian interdepartmental delegation to discuss his evolving concept for the plant’s protection, with both Kyiv and Moscow accusing each other of shelling the site.
Despite his efforts, Russian Ambassador to the UN in Vienna, Mikhail Ulyanov, stated that “declaring that a protection regime at the nuclear plant has been established” is “still a long way off.”
