5.7-Magnitude Quake Jolts Southern Mexico

OAXACA, MEXICO: A 5.7-magnitude earthquake struck southern Mexico at 0440 GMT on Thursday, the US Geological Survey said. The epicenter of the tremor was initially determined to be at 16.3541 degrees north latitude and 94.2685 degrees west longitude at a depth of 87.729 km.

The quake was centered near the San Francisco del Mar, a town and municipality on the Pacific coast of the country in the state of Oaxaca. No serious damage or injuries have been reported yet.

Mexico’s quake-prone location

Mexico is situated on the Pacific Ring of Fire, an arc of fault lines around the Pacific Basin which is vulnerable to severe earthquakes. In September last year, a powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck the western state of Michoacán, killing two people and injuring dozens others. The earthquake on September 19, 2022 occured just an hour after a nationwide preparedness drill, that was being conducted on the anniversary of the 1985 earthquake which claimed more than 10,000 lives. It was also the anniversary of a 2017 tremor which killed 370 people.
