ISLAMABAD/NEW YORK: Daffodils are blooming in the city of New York. Leaves are sprouting from red maples in North Carolina. The cherry blossoms are about to bud in Washington DC. Record extreme winter warmth across much of the eastern United States (US) has caused spring-like situations to arrive earlier than ever lastly recorded in many places, provoking delight over the mild weather and despair over the unfolding climate issues.

New York spring conditions

In the city of New York, one of many United States cities to experience its warmest January on record, spring conditions arrived 32 days before the long-term normal, which has its earliest onset of natural spring in 40 years of the charting seasonal trend by the National Phenology Network.

Spring activity has arrived at least twenty days earlier than usual for vast swathes of the United States east and south-east, with parts of central Texas, south-east Arkansas, Maryland, and southern Ohio, along with New York, all the recording their earliest spring conditions on record so far that year.

“It’s a little unsettling; it’s certainly something that is out of the bounds of when we did normally expect spring,” said director Teresa Crimmins of the National Phenology Network and the environmental scientist at the University of Arizona. “It perhaps is not surprising, given our world’s trajectory, but it is surprising when you live through it.”
