Rome: Officials in Italy have detained a migrant rescue ship run by Doctors Without Borders (MSF) for allegedly violating new government laws on life-saving missions in the Mediterranean, the charity stated on Friday.
The charity said that the ship was impounded Thursday for twenty days and will be fined between $2,100 and $10,590.

However, it added it had been accused of failing to share information, something it adds it has never before been demanded to share.
The Italian government official linked the detention to a new law introduced by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. Prime Minister Meloni took office in October following pledging to curb the number of migrants landing in Italy.
The new law, which was approved by the parliament of Italy on Thursday, obliges ships to perform one rescue at a time. However, critics add it increases the risk of deaths in the Mediterranean Sea.
Italian Interior Ministry said that more than 14,000 migrants have arrived in Italy since the start of the new year.
