ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed the relevant authorities to ensure reliable internet connectivity across Pakistan to promote a cashless economy.

He was chairing a review meeting on the promotion of digital payments and the implementation of the cashless economy initiative in Islamabad on Friday, according to a statement issued by the PM House’s media wing.

The prime minister reiterated that establishing a cashless economy remained one of the government’s foremost priorities, noting that the measures taken so far had begun producing encouraging results.

He commended the Ministry of Finance and other relevant government institutions for their continued efforts to advance the country’s digital financial transformation.

Shehbaz Sharif directed the concerned authorities to develop a comprehensive roadmap, incorporating clearly defined targets and implementation timelines, to establish a nationwide digital payment system and ensure its effective execution.

Emphasising the need to make digital transactions accessible to all segments of society, he instructed officials to promptly resolve difficulties encountered by consumers while using digital payment platforms.

He also stressed the importance of expanding internet coverage and improving access to technology, particularly in areas where digital connectivity remains limited.

The prime minister called for the continuation and expansion of the government-backed initiative encouraging digital transactions between consumers and merchants through the Raast QR Code payment system, describing it as an important component of the government’s broader vision for a cashless economy.

He also directed the authorities to launch an effective public awareness campaign encouraging electricity and gas consumers to pay their utility bills through QR codes printed on their bills.

Furthermore, all federal ministries and government departments were instructed to ensure the complete implementation of the national cashless economy plan.

During the meeting, participants were informed that the digitisation of payment systems across federal and provincial government institutions was progressing rapidly, with most institutions expected to complete the process by December this year.

The meeting was also briefed that all payments under the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) were now being disbursed through digital wallets, marking further progress in the government’s efforts to expand digital financial services.
