ISLAMABAD: Pakistani security forces have foiled another attempted infiltration by terrorists belonging to Fitna al-Khawarij along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, delivering a strong retaliatory response after Afghan Taliban forces opened fire on Pakistani troops in the Shaluzan ssector of Kurram district.

According to security sources, the Afghan terrorists attempted to cross into Pakistani territory on Thursday. Pakistani troops detected the movement and promptly engaged the infiltrators, successfully preventing them from entering the country.

Pakistani forces employed heavy weapons against the positions from which the firing originated, inflicting substantial damage on several Afghan Taliban border posts. The attempted infiltration was successfully thwarted, while the retaliatory action demonstrated the readiness and operational capability of Pakistani security forces to defend the country’s territorial integrity, the sources said.

The latest engagement is part of a series of increasingly frequent confrontations along the Pakistan-Afghanistan frontier, with Islamabad providing irrefutable evidence of the Afghan Taliban administration allowing terrorist organisations to use Afghan territory as a launching pad for attacks inside Pakistan.

Pakistan believes that the Afghan Taliban regime has failed to honour its counterterrorism commitments and continues to provide support, shelter and operational space to Fitna al-Khawarij, the name officially used by the Pakistani state for the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).

Islamabad has repeatedly warned Kabul that continued cross-border infiltration, terrorist activities and attacks on Pakistani border positions will invite a decisive response.

Repeated provocations

The latest incident is not an isolated confrontation. Pakistani security forces have reported several similar engagements with Afghan Taliban personnel along the border in recent weeks.

On November 1, Pakistani security forces responded to firing from Afghan border posts near Angoor Adda in Lower South Waziristan, targeting multiple Afghan Taliban posts, mortar positions and defensive installations. According to the Lower South Waziristan deputy commissioner, the retaliatory action forced Afghan Taliban personnel to abandon several positions and flee. No casualties were reported on the Pakistani side in that particular engagement.

The November 1 confrontation followed an October 27 incident in which cross-border firing and mortar shelling struck civilian areas in Angoor Adda, killing one local resident and injuring five members of the same family. Several shops in the border bazaar were also damaged. The incident triggered anger among local residents, who expressed concern over the impact of recurring cross-border hostilities on civilian lives and livelihoods.

Earlier, on October 10, Pakistani security forces foiled another attempted infiltration in Kurram district. According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), Afghan Taliban border posts opened fire in support of the infiltrating terrorists. The ensuing exchange resulted in the deaths of 12 terrorists and Afghan Taliban personnel. Naib Subedar Hidayat Aman also embraced martyrdom during the engagement.

The sequence of incidents underscores the persistent security challenges confronting Pakistan along its western border, particularly in the tribal districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

TTP safe havens

At the heart of the deteriorating relationship between Islamabad and Kabul is Pakistan’s longstanding concern over the presence and activities of the TTP in Afghanistan.

Pakistan accuses the Afghan Taliban administration of providing safe havens to the banned organisation, allowing its leadership and fighters to plan, organise and launch attacks against Pakistani security forces and civilians. The TTP, a terrorist organisation that emerged in 2007, has intensified its attacks against Pakistani security forces, police installations and civilians in recent years. Although it is a separate organisation from the Afghan Taliban, the two have longstanding ideological and organisational links.

Islamabad maintains that the Afghan Taliban’s return to power in August 2021 provided the TTP with greater operational space across the border, contributing to a renewed wave of terrorism in Pakistan. The Pakistani government has repeatedly called upon the Afghan Taliban administration to prevent its territory from being used by terrorist groups for terrorist activities against neighbouring countries.

Border tensions escalate

Relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan have deteriorated considerably since the Afghan Taliban returned to power in 2021, with repeated border clashes, terrorists attacks and disagreements over security arrangements undermining bilateral ties.

The two countries share an approximately 2,600-kilometre-long border, commonly referred to as the Durand Line by Afghans, which passes through some of the region’s most difficult mountainous terrain and densely populated tribal areas. Pakistan has undertaken extensive border fencing and surveillance measures to prevent unauthorised crossings and terrorist infiltration. However, the rugged geography, longstanding local connections across the frontier and the presence of terrorist groups continue to complicate border management.

Pakistan has repeatedly emphasised that protecting its territorial integrity and preventing terrorist infiltration remain fundamental national security priorities. Security sources said Pakistani forces remain fully alert along the border and are prepared to respond effectively to any further aggression or infiltration attempt.
