ISLAMABAD: The United Nations Security Council has unanimously adopted a Pakistan-initiated Presidential Statement emphasising the need for sustained diplomatic engagement, mediation and dialogue to secure ceasefires and lasting political settlements even during active hostilities.

The statement (PRST) on “The Role of Diplomacy during Active Hostilities” marked an important contribution by Islamabad to the Council’s thematic work on international peace and security.

According to a statement issued by the Foreign Office on Thursday, the adoption underscores the imperative of sustained diplomatic engagement even after hostilities have commenced, including through mediation, good offices and the maintenance of channels of communication, with a view to facilitating ceasefires and promoting durable political settlements.

Building upon Security Council Resolution 2788 (2025), unanimously adopted during Pakistan’s presidency of the Council in July 2025, the statement gives focused attention to the critical role of diplomacy during active hostilities, reaffirming that diplomatic efforts must continue at all stages of the conflict cycle.

The Foreign Office said the Presidential Statement represents a substantive addition to the Council’s existing body of work by bringing together established principles and experiences from different conflict situations within a focused thematic framework.

It added that the statement provides an important collective political reference point for the Council’s continued engagement in promoting de-escalation, facilitating dialogue and advancing peaceful and sustainable political solutions.

The adoption reflects Pakistan’s continued commitment to multilateralism, dialogue and diplomacy, and its constructive contribution towards the maintenance of international peace and security.

Pakistan Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar in a post on X said he was delighted by the adoption of the statement, which builds on the Council’s landmark resolution 2788 (2025).

He said the initiative carries forward Pakistan’s sustained efforts and contributions during its Security Council term to advance the peaceful settlement of disputes.

“When hostilities intensify, diplomacy must not retreat,” Dar said, adding that it must become an even more powerful instrument for de-escalation, dialogue and peace.

He said the statement reaffirms the conviction that the pursuit of peace must never cease, even in the darkest hours of conflict.
