ATLANTA, US: US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has said that Washington shares Pakistan’s concerns over terrorist attacks allegedly originating from Afghan territory, adding that the United States does not want Pakistan to be targeted.

Responding to a question at the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Summit in Atlanta, Rubio acknowledged Pakistan’s concerns about terrorist attacks and Islamabad’s position that the Afghan Taliban had not done enough to restrain terrorist elements operating from its territory.

“Pakistan is concerned about terrorist attacks that are being sponsored from the territory of Afghanistan. They feel as if the Taliban has not done enough to constrain [these elements],” Rubio said.

He also acknowledged Washington’s understanding of Pakistan’s concerns, stating, “We share Pakistan’s concerns.” He made the US position clear, saying, “We don’t want Pakistan to be targeted.”

Rubio’s remarks reflect Washington’s recognition of Pakistan’s security concerns over cross-border terrorism and underscore the US opposition to Pakistan being targeted by terrorist attacks.

Pakistan has consistently maintained that its security and sovereignty cannot be compromised by terrorist groups operating from neighbouring Afghan territory.

Islamabad has repeatedly urged the Taliban regime to fulfil its international commitments by preventing Afghan soil from being used by terrorist organisations to launch attacks against other countries.

Despite Pakistan’s efforts to promote regional peace and stability, continued cross-border terrorist threats remain a serious challenge to its security.

The international community must press the Taliban authorities to take concrete and verifiable action against terrorist groups operating from Afghanistan rather than allowing the problem to undermine regional peace and stability.
