ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has widened Pakistan’s fuel relief scheme to cover motorcycles, rickshaws and Qingqi rickshaws up to 20 years old, opening the Rs100-per-litre petrol relief to a larger number of low-income commuters and transport workers.
The Prime Minister’s Office said on Friday that Shehbaz Sharif issued special directives for the immediate inclusion of the older vehicles, with all motorcycles, rickshaws and Qingqi rickshaws registered after January 1, 2006 now eligible for registration under the Prime Minister Fuel Relief Scheme.

The decision expands the scheme’s coverage after the earlier registration criteria excluded vehicles registered before the specified cut-off date. The authorities have been directed to take immediate measures to incorporate the newly eligible categories.
The fuel relief scheme was introduced amid a sharp rise in petroleum prices and was rolled out nationwide on September 16. It provides Rs100 per litre in petrol relief to eligible motorcycles, rickshaws, other two- and three-wheelers and small cars of up to 800cc.

Under the scheme, eligible motorcycle and two- and three-wheeler users can receive relief on up to 20 litres of petrol per month, translating into maximum assistance of Rs2,000 monthly. Owners of eligible small cars can receive relief on up to 30 litres, or up to Rs3,000 a month.
The government has also established facilitation desks at petrol stations to help eligible citizens with registration and other procedures. The Petroleum Division said on September 17 that Rs25 billion had been provided to the State Bank of Pakistan for the first month of the three-month relief programme, while petroleum dealers were briefed on the reimbursement mechanism.

Federal Minister for Petroleum Ali Pervaiz Malik has described the initiative as targeted assistance for weaker segments, including bikers, two- and three-wheeler users and small-car owners, rather than a blanket fuel subsidy.
The expansion is particularly significant for owners and operators of older motorcycles and Qingqi rickshaws, many of whom depend on these vehicles for daily commuting and income-generating activities.

The government has said the targeted relief is intended to cushion the impact of elevated fuel costs on households and workers who rely heavily on motorcycles, rickshaws and small vehicles for their livelihoods and essential travel.
