MUZAFFARABAD: Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) will elect a new president on September 24, with the formal process for electing the constitutional head of the state set to begin with the submission of nomination papers on September 19.
AJK Chief Election Commissioner Ghulam Mustafa Mughal announced the election schedule, outlining the key stages for the presidential election.
According to the schedule, candidates will submit nomination papers on September 19, after which election authorities will examine the nominations.
The final list of candidates will be issued on September 23, a day before polling.
Presidential Election Process
Under the constitutional framework of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, the president is elected by members of the AJK Legislative Assembly through a vote by a simple majority of the total membership.
The election is conducted under the supervision and control of the Chief Election Commissioner. If no candidate secures the required majority in the first round, a second round is held between the candidates receiving the highest number of votes, with the candidate securing a majority declared successful.

The AJK president serves as the constitutional head of the state, while the elected government, led by the prime minister, performs executive responsibilities under the parliamentary system.
