DUBAI: An oil ship was struck by an unidentified projectile and disabled in the Strait of Hormuz, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO).

The incident was reported at about 9 nautical miles (16 kilometres) north-east of Ash Shishah, Oman, UKMTO said in a warning issued on Monday.
According to information provided by the ship’s master, the ship was hit by an unknown projectile, causing damage to its engine room and leaving the ships unable to operate.
All crew members aboard the ship were reported safe following the incident, although the extent of any environmental impact remained unknown at the time of the report.
UKMTO classified the incident as an attack and said it had received the report from the ship’s master at 2025 UTC on August 24.

The agency advised ships operating in the area to exercise caution while transiting the Strait of Hormuz and to report any suspicious activity.
The incident comes amid heightened security concerns in and around the strategic waterway, through which a significant volume of global oil and energy shipments passes.
UKMTO did not identify the ship, the type of projectile involved or the party responsible for the reported attack.
