WASHINGTON: US senators have demanded an investigation into reported deteriorating conditions aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln, as the aircraft carrier continues an unusually prolonged deployment in the Middle East amid the ongoing war with Iran.
The USS Abraham Lincoln, which carries around 5,000 sailors and Marines, left San Diego, California, on November 21, 2025, initially bound for operations in the South China Sea.
It was subsequently redirected to the Middle East ahead of the US-Israeli attacks on Iran that began on February 28.
Congressional Democrats have called on the US Navy to provide answers following reports of shortages of basic supplies, contaminated water, plumbing failures, deck-safety concerns and serious mental health problems among sailors and Marines serving aboard the carrier.

Senator Richard Blumenthal, in a letter to US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, urged the Pentagon to account for the conditions facing personnel aboard the vessel, which has reportedly remained deployed for more than 250 days without coming ashore for over 200 days.

The senator expressed particular concern over the strain created by the extended deployment, citing reports of inadequate supplies, water-quality concerns, damaged plumbing and deteriorating mental health among the crew.
The prolonged deployment has also generated concern among the families of service members. During two recent meetings, relatives reportedly confronted Navy officials over the conditions aboard the carrier, including alleged food shortages, and pressed commanders for information about when their loved ones would be allowed to return home.
Reports have also emerged of severe mental health difficulties among some personnel, including alleged suicide attempts aboard the carrier. CNN’s Erin Burnett OutFront reported that multiple sailors had reportedly tried to jump overboard as difficult conditions continued during the extended deployment.

According to AFP, Natalie Oliverio of The Military Times spoke to the wife of one sailor, who expressed serious concern about her husband’s wellbeing.
The reports have intensified scrutiny of the Navy’s management of long-duration deployments and raised questions over whether adequate provisions, medical support and welfare services are being provided to personnel serving at sea for extended periods.
Senators are now seeking greater accountability from the Defence Department as concerns mount over the physical and psychological toll of the carrier’s record-setting deployment.
