BADAKHSHAN: Unidentified Gunmen launched an attack on the residence of the Taliban’s army chief, Fasihuddin Fitrat, in Afghanistan’s northeastern Badakhshan province, according to local sources, amid growing security concerns and continued clashes between Taliban forces and armed opposition groups.
The attack took place in the village of Istrap in Wurduj district last week, where Fitrat’s family home is located. It remains unclear whether the Taliban’s chief of army staff was present at the residence when the assault occurred.
Local sources said the attackers opened fire from a nearby mountainside overlooking the property, using both light and heavy weapons, including PK machine guns.
Security personnel guarding the residence returned fire, triggering an exchange of gunfire. The assailants are said to have fled the area after the clash. No casualties or significant property damage have been reported, and no armed group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
The incident comes as Badakhshan has witnessed an increase in armed activity involving Taliban forces and anti-Taliban groups.

Earlier, the Sepah-e Mihan Front briefly claimed control of Yaftal district, while the Afghanistan Freedom Front also carried out attacks on Taliban positions in Zebak district, highlighting the volatile security environment in the province.
According to local reports, sporadic fighting between Taliban forces and opposition groups has continued over the past week, prompting the Taliban leadership to reinforce its military presence in the region.
The province has also witnessed other security incidents in recent days. Taliban’s Director of Information and Culture in Badakhshan was killed in an attack, claimed by Islamic State, further underscoring the deteriorating security situation.
