SOUTHAMPTON, England: England have put themselves on the brink of clinching the No. 1 ranking in men’s T20I cricket after posting a colossal 257 against India in the fifth and final T20I at The Rose Bowl on Saturday, their highest total against India and third-highest total in the overall shortest format.

Put into bat first by India captain Shreyas Iyer, the hosts, already holding an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-match series, unleashed a batting masterclass that left the visitors shell-shocked and chasing shadows on a pristine Southampton surface.

The innings was built around a monumental second-wicket partnership of 233 runs between former captain Jos Buttler and current skipper Harry Brook, who dismantled the Indian bowling attack with breathtaking strokeplay that sent records tumbling across the board.

Buttler breaks Lewis’ record

Leading the charge was the experienced wicketkeeper-batter Buttler, who announced his return to form in emphatic fashion with a scintillating 131 off just 64 deliveries. His innings, which featured 12 boundaries and eight towering sixes, now stands as the highest individual score ever recorded against India in men’s T20Is.

The 35-year-old surpassed West Indies’ Evin Lewis, who had held the record since 2017 with his unbeaten 125 against the reigning champions. Buttler reached his century in just 48 balls before accelerating further in the death overs, showcasing the full range of his devastating power-hitting.

Brook blazes away

Buttler found an able ally in captain Harry Brook, who played what many are calling the innings of his career. The 27-year-old fell agonisingly short of a well-deserved century, remaining unbeaten on 95 off just 45 deliveries, his knock studded with eight sixes and four fours.

The pair’s 233-run stand was the second-highest partnership for any wicket in a men’s T20I involving full-member nations, trailing only the 236-run opening partnership between Afghanistan’s Usman Ghani and Hazratullah Zazai against Ireland in 2019.

Records galore at The Rose Bowl

England’s final total of 257/3 represents their third-highest in men’s T20I history, behind only their 267/3 against West Indies in 2023 and the record 304/2 they posted against South Africa last year.

More significantly for the hosts, the total is now the highest India have ever conceded in the shortest format, surpassing the previous mark of 246/7, which was also against England, during the 2026 T20 World Cup semi-final just two months ago.

Highest totals by England in men’s T20Is:

  • 304/2 vs South Africa (2025)
  • 267/3 vs West Indies (2023)
  • 257/3 vs India (2026)*
  • 248/3 vs West Indies (2025)
  • 246/7 vs India (2026)

England eye top spot

The victory, should they defend their total, would not only complete a comprehensive 4-0 (with one washed out) series whitewash over the three-time world champions but also propel England to the summit of the ICC men’s T20I rankings for the first time since 2023.

England entered the series trailing India at the top of the rankings, but their dominant performances throughout the series, have put them in pole position to reclaim the No. 1 crown.

India’s bowlers had no answers to the onslaught, with Arshdeep Singh (1/52) being the only wicket-taker among the visitors, while Mohammed Siraj (0/63) and Ravi Bishnoi (0/58) endured particularly torrid evenings.

Highest individual scores against India in men’s T20Is:

  • 131 – Jos Buttler (England) – 2026*
  • 125* – Evin Lewis (West Indies) – 2017
  • 119 – Rohit Sharma (India)* – 2026
  • 118 – Glenn Maxwell (Australia) – 2023
  • 117 – Evin Lewis (West Indies) – 2016

India’s chase ahead

With a daunting target of 258 runs to chase, nearly 13 runs per over, India face an uphill battle to salvage any pride from the series. England’s bowling attack, led by Jofra Archer and Adil Rashid, will be confident of defending the total on a pitch that has offered some assistance to spinners as the game has progressed.

The match continues with India’s innings underway, but the record books have already been rewritten at The Rose Bowl, with England standing on the threshold of history, both in the series and in the ICC rankings.
