ISLAMABAD: A powerful weather system is set to lash large swathes of Pakistan from Friday night through Monday, with the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) forecasting rain, windstorms and thundershowers across the country’s upper and central regions as moisture-laden currents from the Arabian Sea intensify over the weekend.

The department has issued widespread alerts for urban flooding, landslides and damage to infrastructure, advising tourists, travellers and farmers to exercise extreme caution as the weather system, expected to peak on Saturday and Sunday, threatens to disrupt normal life across Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Azad Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan and parts of Balochistan.

“Moist currents from the Arabian Sea are continuously penetrating the upper parts of the country, increasing in strength on Saturday evening,” the PMD said in its advisory. “Meanwhile, a westerly wave is also likely to approach the upper parts on Saturday.”

Heavy rains to lash Kashmir, KP and Punjab

The met department has predicted rain, windstorms and thundershowers with isolated heavy rainfall in Neelum Valley, Muzaffarabad, Rawalakot, Poonch, Hattian, Bagh, Haveli, Sudhanoti, Kotli, Bhimber and Mirpur from Friday night through Monday.

Similar conditions are expected to grip major cities of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa including Dir, Chitral, Swat, Kohistan, Malakand, Nowshera, Charsadda, Karak, Tank, Lakki Marwat, Swabi, Shangla, Battagram, Buner, Kohat, Kurram, Dera Ismail Khan, Bannu, Waziristan, Bajaur, Mohmand, Khyber, Orakzai, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Haripur, Peshawar, Mardan and Hangu on Saturday and Sunday.

Punjab will not escape the downpour, with scattered rain and thunderstorms forecast for Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Murree, Galiyat, Attock, Chakwal, Jhelum, Mandi Bahauddin, Gujrat, Gujranwala, Hafizabad, Wazirabad, Faisalabad, Khushab, Sargodha, Lahore, Sheikhupura, Sialkot, Narowal, Sahiwal, Jhang, Toba Tek Singh, Nankana Sahib, Chiniot and Okara on Saturday and Sunday.

The weather conditions are expected to extend into southern Punjab beginning Saturday night, affecting Noor Pur Thal, Bhakkar, Mianwali, Layyah, Bahawalpur, Bahawalnagar, Dera Ghazi Khan, Multan, Khanewal, Lodhran, Muzaffargarh, Kot Addu, Rahim Yar Khan and Rajanpur.

GB and Balochistan also in the firing line

Gilgit-Baltistan is bracing for rain, windstorms and thunderstorms in Diamer, Astore, Ghizer, Skardu, Hunza, Gilgit, Ghanche and Shigar from Saturday night to Monday.

Meanwhile, isolated rain and windstorms have been predicted in Balochistan’s Zhob, Sherani, Kohlu, Barkhan, Dera Bugti and Khuzdar districts on Saturday and Sunday.

Sindh spared as humidity persists

Sindh, however, will largely escape the downpour, with the PMD forecasting “mainly hot and very humid weather” across the province. Only Tharparkar, Sukkur, Shikarpur, Larkana, Dadu and Jacobabad districts are likely to experience isolated rain on Sunday and Monday.

The department noted that prevailing hot and humid conditions would subside during the forecast period in affected areas.

Urban flooding and landslide warning

In a series of precautionary advisories, the PMD warned that heavy rain could cause localised urban flooding in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Peshawar, Gujranwala, Lahore and Faisalabad on Saturday and Sunday.

The department also cautioned that landslides could occur in vulnerable areas of upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan and Kashmir, while water flow could increase in local streams of Kashmir, KP and GB, as well as in the hill torrents of Dera Ghazi Khan.

“Windstorms and lightning could damage weak structures such as solar panels, electric poles and billboards,” the PMD warned, advising authorities to remain vigilant.

Tourists and farmers urged to take precautions

In a clear advisory to the public, the met department urged tourists and travellers to exercise extra caution and avoid unnecessary travel during the forecast period.

“Tourists and travellers are advised to remain extra cautious and avoid unnecessary travelling during the forecast period,” the advisory stated.

Farmers were also advised to manage crop activities in line with the weather conditions and to take care of their livestock.
