MUMBAI: At least six people, including five children, were killed after part of a residential building collapsed in India’s financial capital of Mumbai amid torrential monsoon rains, authorities said on Monday.

The incident occurred late on Sunday in the Mankhurd area in eastern Mumbai, where a section of a three-storey residential building housing several families suddenly gave way.

According to city authorities, one other person was injured in the collapse. Rescue teams rushed to the scene and launched search and rescue operations to locate anyone trapped beneath the debris.

Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde said in a statement that the dilapidated residential building collapsed on Sunday, trapping residents under the rubble.

Authorities said the exact cause of the collapse remained under investigation. Officials were also assessing whether neighbouring buildings faced any structural risks.

The building collapse came as intense monsoon rainfall disrupted normal life across Mumbai, flooding roads, interrupting transport services and forcing educational institutions to close.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) recorded more than 200 millimetres (7.8 inches) of rainfall in the city within a 24-hour period and issued a red alert for Monday, warning of continued heavy rain and gusty winds.

Mumbai authorities declared Monday a holiday for all schools and colleges after widespread flooding inundated roads across the city.

The heavy rainfall disrupted air, rail and road transport across Maharashtra.

According to authorities, flight operations at Mumbai’s international airport were disrupted for nearly an hour because of the adverse weather.

Long-distance train services, including routes connecting Mumbai and Pune, were also cancelled.

The downpours triggered landslides along the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, forcing its closure and disrupting traffic between the two cities.

Heavy rain also caused numerous trees to collapse across Mumbai. Local media reported that at least three people had been killed in separate tree-fall incidents since late last month.

India depends heavily on the annual monsoon season, with hundreds of millions of people relying on seasonal rainfall to support agriculture, industry and water supplies.
