GILGIT: Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Amjad Hussain Advocate was sworn in as the new Chief Minister of Gilgit-Baltistan on Monday after being elected unopposed following his party’s victory in the 2026 regional elections.

Gilgit-Baltistan Governor Syed Mehdi Shah administered the oath at a ceremony in Gilgit attended by political leaders, lawmakers and government officials.

Hussain became the fifth chief minister of Gilgit-Baltistan after no other candidate filed nomination papers for the top post. He was elected to the Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly from the GBA-1 constituency and also serves as president of the PPP’s Gilgit-Baltistan chapter.

Veteran Lawyer and Politician

Born in Gilgit in 1975, Amjad Hussain is a lawyer by profession and has been active in politics for nearly three decades. He serves as president of the Pakistan Peoples Party’s Gilgit-Baltistan chapter and has previously held key positions, including president of the Gilgit-Baltistan High Court Bar Association and the Peoples Lawyers Forum.

He began his political career through the Peoples Students Federation before serving as a member of the Gilgit-Baltistan Council from 2009 to 2014. In 2015, the PPP appointed him as its Gilgit-Baltistan president.

Hussain was elected from the GBA-1 Gilgit-I constituency in the 2026 elections after previously serving as Leader of the Opposition in the Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly. He has advocated greater political and constitutional rights for the region.

Oath-taking Ceremony

Addressing the oath-taking ceremony, Hussain said the PPP had emerged as the largest party in the June 7 elections, attributing the party’s success to the support of voters, particularly young people and women.

“I thank those who gave the Pakistan Peoples Party a 100% result in the elections,” he said.

He said the people had once again placed their trust in the PPP, describing the party’s relationship with the region as one spanning three generations.

The chief minister said the PPP had also secured a strong mandate in Diamer for the first time.

Hussain thanked the PPP leadership for its confidence in him and also expressed gratitude to the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leadership for supporting the formation of the new government in Gilgit-Baltistan.
