MONTERREY: Morocco reached the FIFA World Cup last 16 after defeating the Netherlands 3-2 on penalties following a thrilling 1-1 draw in their Round of 32 match at Monterrey Stadium on Monday.
Ismael Saibari scored the decisive penalty for Morocco after both teams struggled for consistency from the spot in a tense shootout.
Late equaliser saves Morocco
The Netherlands looked set to advance when Cody Gakpo opened the scoring in the 72nd minute. The Liverpool forward finished a quick counter-attacking move after being picked out by Crysencio Summerville.
Gakpo was emotional after scoring, with the goal coming days after he and his partner suffered the loss of their unborn son during pregnancy.
Morocco continued to push despite falling behind and had already threatened when Achraf Hakimi struck the crossbar with a powerful effort in the second half.
Their pressure finally paid off in stoppage time when defender Issa Diop rose highest to head in the equaliser in the first minute of added time, forcing extra time.
Atlas Lions advance
Neither side could find a winner during the additional 30 minutes, sending the match to penalties.
Morocco held their nerve to complete a memorable comeback and eliminate the three-time World Cup runners-up.
The Atlas Lions will now face co-hosts Canada in Houston on Saturday.
