LONDON: UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak called on the Iranian government to give answers about the execution and burial of British-Iranian dual national Alireza Akbari. Akbari was executed by Iran earlier this month.

“The Iranian government is prolonging the suffering of the family, and it is, unfortunately, typical of that disregard for fundamental human dignity,” Rishi Sunak told parliament.

“Iran must now give answers about the circumstances of his death and burial.”

UK imposes fresh sanctions on Iranian officials

On January 14, Tehran defied calls from the United Kingdom and the US and executed Alireza Akbari, who once served as Iran’s deputy defense minister.

That prompted the UK to impose a fresh round of sanctions on Iranian officials earlier this week.

Labour parliamentarian Andy Slaughter said he was due to meet a UK foreign office minister on Thursday along with the family of Alireza Akbari, who had lived in Slaughter’s constituency, to seek the government’s help at “this time of greatest suffering.”
