BELFAST, Ireland: Ireland produced the biggest upset of their cricketing history on Friday, outclassing reigning world champions India by 34 runs in the first T20I of the two-match home series.
A defiant 64-run partnership between captain Lorcan Tucker and Gareth Delany powered the hosts to 182/9, before Matt Hollard and Matthew Humphreys shared six wickets to bowl India out for 148.

The victory was built on resilience, smart batting, and a disciplined bowling performance that left India’s star-studded line-up chasing shadows on a night when nothing seemed to go right for the visitors.
Tucker-Delany partnership turns the tide
India’s newly appointed captain Shreyas Iyer won the toss and elected to field first, a decision that would soon backfire spectacularly.
Ireland’s innings got off to a shaky start, losing four wickets with just 51 runs on the board in 7.1 overs. The visiting bowlers, led by Harshit Rana, were making early inroads, and another familiar collapse seemed imminent.
But Tucker, who walked in at No. 4, had other plans. The Irish skipper joined forces with Gareth Delany to stage a remarkable recovery. The pair added 64 runs for the fifth wicket, batting with composure and intent against a formidable Indian bowling attack that had dominated them in previous encounters.
Tucker top-scored with a blistering 36-ball 50, studded with five fours and two sixes, before Rana finally broke the partnership in the 15th over. Delany, however, was far from finished. He stitched another crucial 49-run stand with George Dockrell (19) for the sixth wicket, pushing Ireland’s total to a formidable 182/9.
Delany’s knock of 49 off just 32 deliveries, featuring three sixes and three fours, proved to be the backbone of Ireland’s innings.
For India, Rana was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 3/24 in his four overs. Arshdeep Singh and Axar Patel claimed two wickets each, while Shivam Dube chipped in with one.

Abhishek blitz gives India hope, but it fades
Chasing 183 for victory, India needed a flying start, and Abhishek Sharma delivered exactly that. The world’s top-ranked T20I batter unleashed a flamboyant assault on the Irish bowlers, smashing 49 off just 20 deliveries, including seven fours and two sixes.
But his dismissal in the eighth over triggered a collapse. India lost wickets at an alarming rate, slipping to 100/6 in 12 overs, needing 83 runs from the final 48 deliveries.
Shivam Dube (25) and Axar Patel (15) offered brief resistance with a 35-run partnership, but their back-to-back dismissals left India in a precarious position, needing 46 runs off 19 balls with only two wickets in hand.
Matthew Humphreys delivered the knockout blow in the decisive penultimate over, dismissing both Rana and Arshdeep Singh to seal a historic victory for the European side.
Bowling heroes emerge for Ireland
Ireland’s bowling attack rose to the occasion spectacularly. Matt Hollard and Matthew Humphreys led the charge with three wickets each, while left-arm pacer Jai Moondra bagged two crucial scalps. Liam McCarthy and Delany chipped in with one wicket apiece.
The disciplined bowling performance restricted India to 148 all out in 18.5 overs, 34 runs short of the target.

What this victory means for Ireland
This win is more than just a statistic. It is a statement that Irish cricket has arrived on the global stage. Ireland had never beaten India in T20 cricket in eight previous attempts, but on Friday, they played with the belief and execution of a team that belongs among the elite.
For Tucker, who led from the front with both bat and captaincy, the victory is a personal milestone. For Ireland, it is a moment of national pride and a testament to the growth of cricket in the country.
The two-match series will conclude on Sunday at the same venue, with India eager to bounce back and Ireland looking to prove that this historic win was no fluke.
Brief history of Ireland vs India in T20 cricket
