ISLAMABAD: Karachi Port has crossed the milestone of receiving more than 2,000 vessels for the first time in nearly eight years, reflecting growing maritime activity and reinforcing the port’s position as Pakistan’s principal gateway for international trade.
According to official figures released by the maritime authorities, a total of 2,003 ships called at Karachi Port between July 2025 and June 13, 2026, marking the first time since fiscal year 2017-18 that vessel arrivals have surpassed the 2,000 mark.
During the same period, the total gross registered tonnage (GRT) handled at the port exceeded 84.43 million tons, highlighting the scale of maritime operations and commercial activity taking place at the country’s busiest seaport.
The data shows a 7.5 percent increase in vessel arrivals and a 3 percent rise in gross registered tonnage compared to the corresponding period l ast year, indicating sustained growth in cargo movement and shipping traffic.
Officials described the achievement as a reflection of expanding maritime trade and increasing economic activity, underscoring Karachi Port’s central role in Pakistan’s trade and logistics network, through which a substantial share of the country’s imports and exports is handled.
Chairman Karachi Port Trust, Rear Admiral (Retd.) Shahid Ahmed, attributed the milestone to increased shipping activity, improved operational efficiency, and the continued confidence of international shipping lines in the port’s capabilities.
He noted that Karachi Port, established in 1887, remains a key hub for containerized cargo, bulk commodities, and general merchandise, connecting Pakistan to major regional and global maritime trade routes.
According to maritime authorities, the increase in ship arrivals is a positive indicator for Pakistan’s trade sector, reflecting expanding business activity and the effective utilization of port infrastructure.
Officials further stated that the achievement is the result of sustained efforts to modernize port operations, strengthen maritime connectivity, improve logistics infrastructure, and promote investment in the maritime sector.
The milestone is expected to further consolidate Karachi Port’s status as Pakistan’s leading maritime trade hub and support national efforts aimed at enhancing trade, logistics, and economic growth through the country’s ports.
