WASHINGTON/TEHRAN: A public war of words has erupted on social media between a senior Iranian lawmaker and a leading White House official, with both men trading sharp remarks over military strength, regional security and recent developments involving Iran and the United States.

The exchange involved Ebrahim Azizi, chairman of Iran’s parliamentary National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, and Dan Scavino, the White House Deputy Chief of Staff.

The disagreement unfolded on X, where the two officials posted a series of increasingly hostile messages over several days.

The latest round of exchanges came on Thursday when Azizi shared an image depicting a missile launch and a strike on a target.

Referring to Iran’s Kheibar Shekan missile system, he accompanied the post with a brief message suggesting that future events would determine the outcome of the ongoing tensions.

Scavino responded dismissively, mocking the post and questioning the authenticity of the imagery. He also criticised Iran’s underground bunker facilities, using mocking language in a post that quickly drew widespread attention online.

Azizi replied by challenging the White House official’s remarks and referencing what he described as the evacuation of thousands of Americans as well as the destruction of US military facilities in the region. He ended his response with a smiley-face emoji, adding a note of sarcasm to the increasingly heated exchange.

The online confrontation comes amid heightened tensions between Tehran and Washington and reflects the growing role of social media as a platform for political messaging and strategic signalling. While such exchanges do not constitute official diplomatic communication, they often attract significant attention and can influence public perceptions during periods of geopolitical strain.

Neither side indicated any intention to de-escalate the verbal sparring, and the posts continued to circulate widely across social media platforms, drawing reactions from supporters and critics alike.

The episode underscores the sharp rhetoric that continues to characterise relations between Iran and the United States, with senior political figures increasingly using online platforms to project positions on security and military issues before a global audience.
