ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan government on Friday announced a reduction of Rs22 per litre in the prices of petrol and high-speed diesel (HSD), aiming to provide relief to the public amid declining global oil prices.

According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), the new price of petrol has been set at Rs381.78 per litre, while HSD will now be sold at Rs380.78 per litre.

“The Prime Minister had promised the nation that relief would be provided to the public as soon as there was room to do so,” the PMO stated. “That promise has been fulfilled exactly as stated.”

The latest reduction follows last week’s decrease, when petrol prices were cut by Rs6 per litre to Rs403.78, while diesel prices were lowered by Rs6.80 per litre to Rs402.78.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said providing relief to the public remains one of the government’s top priorities.

“Even under extremely difficult circumstances, the federal government continued providing relief to the public and offered fuel subsidies for users of public and goods transport, motorcycles, and rickshaws,” the PMO quoted the prime minister as saying.

The statement further said that timely government measures ensured uninterrupted fuel supplies in Pakistan at a time when several countries in the region faced shortages and long queues at petrol stations.

The PMO also highlighted that during the peak of the global oil crisis, the government prevented further increases in fuel prices by providing subsidies exceeding Rs130 billion despite rising international oil prices.

Meanwhile, international oil prices continued to decline on Friday, with crude futures heading for their steepest weekly losses since early April following reports that the United States and Iran had reached an agreement on a potential ceasefire extension.
