NEW DELHI: Rob Jetten raised concerns over press freedom, minority rights and a long-running international child abduction case during discussions linked to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the Netherlands.
According to Dutch media reports and public statements issued after the meeting, Jetten referred to concerns regarding freedom of expression and the treatment of minorities in India during talks held in the Dutch capital.
The Dutch prime minister also highlighted the case of Insiya, a girl abducted by her father from Amsterdam in 2016 when she was two years old and later taken to India.
“We also spoke about the case regarding the abduction of Insiya to India by her father,” Jetten said in a statement posted on the social media platform X following his meeting with Modi.
Civil liberties
The case has remained a sensitive issue between Dutch authorities and the family involved for several years. The father was previously convicted and sentenced to prison in connection with the case.
The discussions took place during Modi’s two-day visit to the Netherlands, where bilateral cooperation, trade and diplomatic relations were also part of the agenda.
The remarks by the Dutch premier drew attention internationally as debates over civil liberties, press freedom and minority protections in India continue to receive scrutiny from rights groups and foreign observers.
