BEIJING: China on Monday strongly criticised the United States for imposing sanctions on three Chinese companies accused by Washington of supporting Iran’s military-related activities, describing the measures as unlawful and unilateral.
Speaking at press briefing in Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said China firmly opposed the sanctions and would take necessary steps to safeguard the legitimate interests of its businesses.
“The Chinese government has consistently required domestic enterprises to carry out overseas operations in accordance with local laws and international regulations,” Guo said. “China will firmly protect the lawful rights and interests of Chinese companies.”
According to Reuters, the remarks came after the United States announced a new round of sanctions targeting entities allegedly involved in assisting Iran’s military and defence-related operations.
Washington claims the companies helped facilitate activities linked to Iran’s defence sector, amid growing tensions surrounding Tehran’s regional role and nuclear programme.
Beijing, however, rejected the accusations and criticised the US approach, arguing that sanctions and pressure tactics would only worsen instability in the region.
Guo said the immediate international priority should be preventing further escalation of conflict rather than “maliciously linking and smearing” other countries through political accusations.
China has repeatedly opposed what it calls the excessive use of unilateral sanctions by the United States, particularly measures not authorised by the United Nations Security Council.
Beijing maintains that disputes should be resolved through dialogue and diplomatic engagement rather than economic coercion.
The latest exchange highlights continuing friction between China and the United States over Iran-related policies, trade restrictions and broader geopolitical tensions.
China remains one of Iran’s key trading partners and has frequently criticised Western sanctions imposed on Tehran.
