WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has described American naval operations as acting “like pirates” while referring to efforts to enforce a blockade linked to the ongoing conflict with Iran.
Speaking at a rally in Florida, Trump said US forces had seized a vessel and its cargo as part of operations tied to the blockade. “We… land on top of it and we took over the ship. We took over the cargo, took over the oil. It’s a very profitable business,” he said.
“We’re like pirates,” he added, drawing cheers from supporters. “We’re sort of like pirates. But we’re not playing games.”
The remarks come amid heightened tensions in the region following the closure of the Strait of Hormuz by Iran, a critical route for global oil and gas shipments. Tehran effectively shut the waterway after the US-Israeli air campaign began earlier this year.
In response, the United States imposed a blockade on Iranian ports after diplomatic efforts failed to produce a breakthrough. US Central Command said it has redirected dozens of vessels to “ensure compliance” with the restrictions.
US officials have indicated the blockade will continue for the foreseeable future, applying to all ships regardless of nationality. Iran, however, has vowed to maintain pressure on the strait as long as the US continues its measures.
The developments highlight growing confrontation between the two sides, raising concerns over global energy supplies and maritime security.
