Pakistan Emphasises Closer Economic, Institutional Ties with Iraq

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari has emphasised the need to strengthen economic and institutional cooperation between Pakistan and Iraq during a telephone conversation with Iraq’s Prime Minister-designate, Ali Falih Khadim Al-Zaidi.

The President congratulated Al-Zaidi on his nomination and expressed confidence in his leadership at an important moment for Iraq. He conveyed his best wishes for the formation of a stable and effective government, an official statement said on Friday.

During the discussion, President Zardari highlighted the longstanding relationship between Pakistan and Iraq, describing it as one rooted in shared values and mutual respect. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to further deepening bilateral ties.

The President pointed to significant opportunities for expanding cooperation in key sectors such as trade, investment, energy, infrastructure, agriculture, and renewable energy.

He also stressed the importance of boosting academic collaboration and promoting people-to-people exchanges to ensure a sustainable and long-term partnership.

In response, Prime Minister-designate Al-Zaidi thanked President Zardari for his warm wishes and extended an invitation for an official visit to Iraq at a mutually convenient time.

Pakistan and Iraq share longstanding and cordial relations built on common cultural, religious, and historical ties. Both countries have consistently supported each other on international platforms and maintain close diplomatic engagement.

Over the years, cooperation has expanded into areas such as trade, energy, and investment, with growing interest in sectors like infrastructure and agriculture.
