KARACHI: Peshawar Zalmi and Islamabad United will face each other in the HBL PSL 11 Qualifier today at the National Bank Stadium, Karachi, with records, form and key performers shaping one of the tournament’s biggest contests.
The winner of the Qualifier will book a direct place in the final, while the losing side will get another chance through the second eliminator. That makes today’s match a high-pressure contest, but not a knockout for either team.
Zalmi enter the playoffs as the strongest side of the league stage, finishing at the top with eight wins from 10 matches. Their only defeat came in their final league fixture against Lahore Qalandars, while one match ended without a result.
Islamabad United, meanwhile, secured their place in the Qualifier after back-to-back wins over Hyderabad Kingsmen and Multan Sultans.
Zalmi’s winning record
Peshawar Zalmi have built their campaign around a powerful top order. Kusal Mendis has been the tournament’s leading run-scorer with 500 runs, while captain Babar Azam is close behind with 485 runs.
Their partnership has been one of Zalmi’s biggest strengths this season, giving the side consistency and control at the top.
Mendis has provided aggression, while Babar has brought stability and experience. Behind them, Michael Bracewell, Aaron Hardie, Abdul Samad and Iftikhar Ahmed give Zalmi depth and finishing power.
With the ball, left-arm wrist-spinner Sufiyan Muqeem has emerged as Zalmi’s standout performer. He is the leading wicket-taker of HBL PSL 11 with 19 wickets and has combined wicket-taking ability with control.
Zalmi bowling coach Azhar Mahmood, however, has warned that past form alone will not be enough. “It is true that we have been playing good cricket, but we still need to continue that if we are to win the tournament,” he said.
United’s playoff experience
Islamabad United may not have the same individual batting numbers as Zalmi, but they bring strong playoff pedigree. United have won three PSL titles and have more playoff wins than any other team in the tournament’s history.
Sameer Minhas has been United’s top run-scorer this season with 299 runs, while Mark Chapman comes into the Qualifier after a match-winning 69 not out off 33 balls against Multan Sultans. Devon Conway, Mohsin Riaz and Shadab Khan also remain important batting options.
Shadab has been United’s key bowler, taking 14 wickets, while maintaining one of the best economy rates among leading wicket-takers. Imad Wasim, Salman Irshad and Chris Green add further experience and control to the attack.
Green acknowledged the challenge of facing Zalmi’s strong batting line-up. “It’s shaping up to be a really exciting match, and I’m looking forward to the challenge, especially bowling against a strong batting line-up,” he said. “They have a lot of quality players, and we’ll be aiming to restrict them to a low total while taking wickets along the way.”
Players to watch
For Zalmi, the key players are Kusal Mendis, Babar Azam and Sufiyan Muqeem. For United, Shadab Khan, Mark Chapman, Sameer Minhas and Chris Green could play decisive roles.
The Karachi surface may also influence the outcome. The average first-innings score at the venue in PSL matches is 173, while the average second-innings score is 165.
If the pitch is batting-friendly, Zalmi’s top order may hold the edge. If it is slower, United’s spinners and experienced all-rounders could bring them strongly into the contest.
Cricket World’s preview has predicted Peshawar Zalmi as favourites, with Mendis and Sufiyan among the major impact players. However, United’s record in pressure matches makes the Qualifier difficult to call.
Head-to-head
Peshawar Zalmi and Islamabad United have shared a closely contested rivalry in the HBL PSL over the years.
- Matches played: 26–27
- Peshawar Zalmi wins: 13
- Islamabad United wins: 13
- No result: 1
The near-equal record highlights how evenly matched the two sides have been, with several high-scoring encounters and closely fought games adding to the intensity of the rivalry.
Former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram believes both teams bring strong credentials into the Qualifier, making it a closely contested encounter.
“Islamabad United are a very good side. They have momentum on their side and being three-time champions, they know how to come back in pressure situations. Their core group is strong, and players like Chapman and Conway bring experience and are capable of scoring crucial runs,” he said.
On Peshawar Zalmi, Akram highlighted their dominant performances this season. “Peshawar Zalmi have been outstanding this season. They pulled off the highest successful chase in PSL history and have won matches comfortably. They are confident and will be a tough side to beat.”
