ISLAMABAD: Azerbaijan’s state energy company SOCAR said it is ready to supply liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Pakistan upon request, as Islamabad moves to secure spot cargoes to ease a growing energy shortfall.

The company told Reuters on Tuesday that a framework agreement signed in 2025 between SOCAR Trading and Pakistan LNG Limited allows the Pakistani buyer to purchase LNG cargoes directly under an accelerated procedure.

“SOCAR is ready to provide LNG to Pakistan as soon as PLL submits a corresponding request,” the company said, without confirming whether such a request has already been made or when deliveries could begin.

Pakistan, which relies heavily on gas for power generation, remains exposed to declining domestic production and volatility in global LNG prices, particularly amid supply disruptions linked to the ongoing tensions surrounding Iran.

Facing criticism over power outages ahead of peak summer demand, authorities have moved to secure additional supplies. The power division has asked the petroleum division to arrange around 400 million cubic feet per day (mmcfd) of LNG for electricity generation, reports Reuters.

Separately, Pakistan is also in advanced discussions with Qatar for the supply of at least four LNG cargoes, which could transit through the Strait of Hormuz in the coming days.

Qatar had declared force majeure last month on its global LNG contracts, including those with Pakistan, adding further uncertainty to supply.
