BEIJING: China has officially placed the world’s largest fully electric intelligent container ship into commercial operation, marking a significant step toward low-carbon maritime transport, according to state media.

The vessel, Ning Yuan Dian Kun, began service on April 15 after completing sea trials, Chinese state news agency ‘Xinhua’ reported on Monday. Developed by the Shanghai Merchant Ship Design and Research Institute and operated by Ningbo Ocean Shipping Co., the 10,000-tonne-class ship is currently the largest fully electric container vessel in operation.

With a capacity of around 740 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), the ship is designed for short-sea coastal routes in eastern China, particularly the Ningbo–Jiaxing corridor. It is powered entirely by containerised battery systems with a total capacity of approximately 19,000–20,000 kWh, enabling fully electric propulsion without reliance on fossil fuels.

The vessel is equipped with intelligent navigation systems, including route optimisation and autonomous collision avoidance. Officials say it delivers zero emissions, minimal noise, and eliminates onboard pollution. It also supports rapid charging and potential battery-swapping at coastal ports, ensuring continuous operations on short-distance feeder routes.

Industry experts describe the ship as part of China’s broader push toward green and smart maritime logistics. Rather than replacing long-haul cargo vessels, it is intended as a pilot model for scaling electric shipping technology in regional routes where charging infrastructure is feasible.

Additional sister ships are expected to enter service in the coming months, reflecting a wider effort to decarbonise coastal logistics and reduce dependence on conventional marine fuels. The development also highlights growing global competition in zero-emission shipping and is likely to accelerate investment in shore-side charging systems and smart port infrastructure.
