RIYADH: Saudi Arabia on Saturday “strongly condemned” the attack on United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) that killed a French soldier and injured several others, a statement by the country’s foreign ministry says.

The Saudi foreign ministry “affirms the Kingdom’s complete rejection of all forms of violence”.

The ministry reiterated the country’s support for the mission, and stressed that the perpetrators be held “accountable and receive a deterrent punishment”.

Saudi Arabia also extended condolences to the government and people of France, and wishes a speedy recovery to the injured.

Attack on UN peacekeepers in Lebanon

A French soldier serving with the UN peacekeeping mission in Lebanon has been killed, and three others were wounded in an attack in the village of Ghandouriyeh in southern Lebanon, UNIFIL said on Saturday.

UNIFIL noted that initial assessments indicated they came from non-state actors and that an investigation had been launched into what it called “a deliberate attack”.

In calls with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, French President Emmanuel Macron condemned the “unacceptable attack”, his office said in a statement on Saturday.

Lebanon’s army condemned the shooting and said it had opened an investigation.

President Aoun has also offered condolences and ordered an immediate probe, while Prime Minister Salam condemned the attack.

The attack took place just days after an Israel-Lebanon 10-day ceasefire took effect.
