DOUALA, Cameroon: Pope Pope Leo XIV on Friday warned that the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence could deepen “conflict, fear and violence”, as controversy continues over an AI-generated post linked to US President Donald Trump.

Speaking during his visit to Cameroon, the pope said the growing influence of AI posed risks not only in its application but also in how it could reshape perceptions of reality.

His remarks come after backlash over a now-deleted AI-generated image that appeared to depict Trump as Jesus.

Addressing teachers and students at the Catholic University of Central Africa in Yaounde, the pontiff said: “The challenge posed by these systems is greater than it appears: it is not just about the use of new technologies, but about the gradual replacement of reality by its simulation.”

“In this way, polarisation, conflict, fear and violence spread. What is at stake is not merely the risk of error, but a transformation in our very relationship with truth.”

Row over AI image

The pope’s comments form part of a broader push for ethical safeguards as governments and institutions grapple with the implications of rapidly advancing AI technologies.

The debate intensified after Trump shared an AI-generated image portraying himself in a Christ-like form, which was later deleted following criticism from religious leaders.

The incident has added urgency to discussions on the responsible use of AI tools.

Despite the controversy, the pope’s Africa tour has drawn large crowds, reflecting strong public engagement with his message of peace and accountability.

His visit is expected to continue with further engagements across the region.
