MANILA: Foreign ministers from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) have called on the United States and Iran to intensify diplomatic efforts aimed at securing a permanent resolution to their conflict, while stressing the importance of fully implementing the existing ceasefire, announced on April 8, 2026, aimed at ending the recent conflict between the United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran.
In a virtual meeting held on Monday to address the escalating situation in the Middle East, the ministers underscored the need for continued dialogue between Washington and Tehran. They emphasised that sustained negotiations are essential to prevent further instability and ensure long-term peace in the region.
The bloc also highlighted concerns over maritime security, urging the restoration of safe, unimpeded and continuous passage for vessels and aircraft through the Strait of Hormuz – a critical global shipping route.
Disruptions in the strait have raised fears over energy security and international trade, given its strategic importance for oil transportation.
ASEAN’s intervention reflects growing international concern over the broader implications of the conflict, particularly its potential to impact global supply chains and economic stability.
The ministers reiterated their support for peaceful solutions and adherence to international law, calling on all parties to exercise restraint. They commended the efforts of Pakistan and all parties involved for the collaborative efforts in this regard.
The statement comes as tensions remain high despite a ceasefire agreement, with regional and global stakeholders closely monitoring developments and urging a diplomatic path forward.
