ISLAMABAD: Foreign Ministers of Spain and Canada on Wednesday commended Pakistan’s role in creating space for diplomacy, including efforts toward an initial ceasefire between the United States and Iran.

Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares, during a telephonic conversation with Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, appreciated Pakistan’s role in creating space for diplomacy, including efforts toward an initial ceasefire, and conveyed Spain’s full support for these efforts, a Foreign Office statement said.

During the call, the two leaders discussed the latest regional developments.  Ishaq underscored Pakistan’s sustained efforts to promote dialogue and diplomacy for lasting peace.

Meanwhile, Ishaq Dar also spoke with Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand and discussed the latest regional developments and Pakistan’s ongoing diplomatic efforts.

Ishaq Dar, during the call, underscored Pakistan’s commitment to further advancing these efforts toward lasting peace.

“FM Anand appreciated Pakistan’s role, including its efforts toward achieving the initial ceasefire, and conveyed Canada’s support for promoting stability and peace,” it said.

Earlier on Wednesday morning, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced that the United States, its allies, and Iran had agreed to a ceasefire “everywhere”, including Lebanon, following mediation by his government to stop weeks of fighting.

“I am pleased to announce that the Islamic Republic of Iran and the United States of America, along with their allies, have agreed to an immediate ceasefire everywhere, including Lebanon and elsewhere, EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY,” Sharif posted on X.

Both Tehran and Washington announced they had agreed to a two-week ceasefire barely an hour before President Donald Trump’s deadline to obliterate Iran was set to expire.

Accepting Pakistan’s suggestion of a two-week ceasefire, US President Donald Trump announced a two-week suspension of military action against Iran following discussions with Pakistan’s leadership.
