SYDNEY: Former Australia opener David Warner has been charged with drink-driving after being stopped by police in Sydney over the weekend, according to media reports on Tuesday.
The 39-year-old, who retired from international cricket in 2024 but continues to play Twenty20 leagues worldwide, was allegedly driving a van that stopped short of a random roadside testing site on Sunday.
Australia’s national broadcaster Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) reported that police officers approached the vehicle and conducted a breath test, which returned a positive result.
Warner was subsequently arrested and taken to a local police station.
According to reports by ABC and other local outlets, he was charged with mid-range drink-driving.
He is due to appear before the Downing Centre Local Court on May 7.
A separate report by 9News said a follow-up breath analysis allegedly recorded a reading of 0.104, above the legal alcohol limit in New South Wales.
Police confirmed the incident in a statement but did not identify the individual involved.
However, multiple media organisations named Warner as the person charged.
The reports said the vehicle had stopped and parked short of the testing point before officers approached and carried out the test.
Warner retired from international cricket in 2024 after a distinguished career.
He scored 8,786 runs in 112 Test matches and was a key figure in Australia’s batting line-up across formats.
He remains active in franchise-based Twenty20 cricket and has featured in leagues around the world.
