ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s President and Prime Minister reaffirmed their commitment to safeguarding the religious and economic rights of minorities as the country’s Christian community marks Easter on Sunday.

In separate messages, they underscored the importance of ensuring equal protection and opportunities for all citizens, regardless of their faith, and acknowledged the contributions of minority communities to the nation’s social and economic fabric.

Easter, celebrated by Christians in Pakistan and around the world, commemorates the resurrection of Jesus Christ and stands as one of the most significant events in the Christian calendar.

The occasion symbolises hope, renewal, and the triumph of life over death, encouraging values of compassion, forgiveness, and unity among believers.

For many Christians, Easter is not only a time of spiritual reflection and prayer but also an opportunity to gather with family and community, reinforcing bonds of solidarity and faith while renewing a sense of resilience and optimism for the future.

Christianity is the third-largest religion in Pakistan, with the 2023 census reporting more than three million adherents, accounting for approximately 1.3 percent of the country’s total population.

In his message, the President said this day symbolises compassion, hope, renewal, rebirth and the triumph of good over evil.

Praising the role of Christian community across Pakistan, he said their contributions are integral to our society and deserve recognition and respect.

“The government remains committed to protecting the life, property, honor and security of minority communities, and to supporting their welfare,” he added.

Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, in his message, said Easter carries a universal message of love and renewed hope for all humanity.

He said this day embodies the values of sacrifice and forgiveness, as well as peace, tolerance, brotherhood, and goodwill, promoting social cohesion and interfaith harmony.

“Ensuring the protection of the religious, economic and educational rights of all citizens, especially minorities, remains a key priority of the government,” the Pakistani prime minister said.

Shehbaz Sharif said the Christian community continues to play an active and invaluable role in the country’s economic and social development.
