ISLAMABAD: The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) on Saturday thanked President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minsiter Shehbaz Sharif for extending their congratulations after the party’s decisive win in Bangladesh’s general elections.

The BNP, headed by Tarique Rahman, secured a two-thirds majority on Friday, paving the way for its return to power after two decades. Rahman, the son of party founder and former President Ziaur Rahman, is widely expected to take office as Prime Minister.

“Thank you for your warm congratulations and thoughtful message, His Excellency the President of Pakistan,” the BNP said on X.

“Bangladesh and Pakistan share a history that has seen both challenges and cooperation, yet our peoples have continued to value dialogue, respect, and regional engagement. We remain hopeful that, in the years ahead, our two countries will further strengthen constructive ties, expand economic and people-to-people connections, and work together for a more peaceful and prosperous South Asia,” the BNP said.

Earlier on Friday, President Asif Ali Zardari extended his felicitations to the BNP and its leader, Tarique Rahman, on securing landslide majority in the national elections and receiving the mandate to form the next government.

Reaffirming Pakistan’s support for the sovereignty and democratic aspirations of Bangladesh, Zardari said Pakistan looks forward to working with the new government to strengthen cooperation in trade, defence, cultural exchanges, and regional forums.

Meanwhile, the BNP also thanked Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for his warm felicitations to Tarique Rahman on leading the BNP to a resounding victory in the Parliamentary elections in Bangladesh.

“We also appreciate your kind words regarding the successful conduct of the elections and the democratic spirit of our people,” it said on X.

“This mandate reflects the confidence of the citizens of Bangladesh and reinforces our commitment to inclusive governance, stability, and national development,” it added.

“Bangladesh acknowledges the recent positive momentum in our engagements and remains open to fostering a forward-looking relationship with Pakistan based on mutual respect, sovereign equality, and constructive dialogue. We look forward to exploring avenues of practical cooperation that contribute to regional peace, stability, and shared progress in South Asia,” the statement said.

It is pertinent to mention that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also telephoned Tarique Rahman to congratulate him on his party’s “historic and resounding victory” in Bangladesh’s parliamentary election, according to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office.

The premier conveyed heartfelt felicitations on behalf of the government and people of Pakistan to the chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party.
